A disciplined approach with creative solutions.

Remediation is a term often used within the environmental arena and is usually associated with the cleanup of contaminated waters and soils, but not necessarily with the completed job. Cardinal focuses on a systematic approach designed to reach project closure as soon as possible, thus saving the client money and improving the environment. Cardinal's experienced and talented engineers and hydrogeologists have designed, implemented, and closed numerous contaminated sites. Successful remediation projects include: hydrocarbon-contaminated soils and groundwater; surface water; lead-contaminated soils associated with a foundry disposal area; perchloroethylene-contaminated soils and groundwater associated with dry cleaning establishments; asbestos removal and building demolition; and solvent-contaminated groundwater and soil.

Cardinal believes remediation projects should not become research projects nor should they necessarily be "high tech." Thus, Cardinal conducts deliberate site investigative efforts to minimize delineation and characterization costs and moves directly into the remediation phase. Through Cardinal’s approach of using its resources to achieve defined goals and desired outcomes, our remediation project costs are lower than others. Similarly, all remediation projects do not need the latest and greatest technology or equipment. Cardinal seeks, on its client’s behalf, cost effective solutions based on each site’s unique requirements. Through continuing education courses and professional organizations, Cardinal’s engineers and hydrogeologists stay abreast of technological advances and findings, and through their experiences, provide insight and workable solutions.

Challenge: A gasoline station owner wanted to clean up a subsurface petroleum fuel spill at minimum time, cost, and hassle.

Solution: Cardinal was the final consultant hired for this project and therefore had a significant amount of data available on the site from previous investigative work. Using existing delineations and soil characteristics, Cardinal designed and employed a combination of soil vapor venting, bio stimulation, and hydraulic gradient control. This mix of high and low tech approaches resulted in a cleanup which took eighteen months instead of the projected five years under the previous consultants’ plan and cost only 30% of the first plan.

"We have relied on Cardinal Engineers for the past four years to meet our environmental permitting, remediation, auditing, training, and industrial compliance needs. We could not be happier with the relationship."
